Summer Institute in Service-Learning
Summer Institute 2010
June 16-18, 2010
Hilton Austin Airport, Austin, TX
Service Learning Texas is proud to announce its 7th Annual Summer Institute. The annual Service Learning Texas Summer Institute is a key event for educators, youth and community members in Texas who are interested in service-learning, the thoughtful integration of community service with rigorous classroom learning. Each year the Summer Institute provides the kind of quality professional development that “has the ability to change lives” according to one student attendee.
Educators and students from around the state will gather in Austin June 16-18 for this premier service-learning training event. Attendees will learn from experts in the field such as renowned consultants Cathy Berger Kaye and Jim Toole; Joan Liptrot, Executive Director of the Institute for Global Education and Service-Learning; KIDS Consortium, a nonprofit organization that helps transform classrooms and communities through an award-winning educational model; and middle school science teacher and Wetland Watchers founder, Barry Guillot. Additionally, we'll have workshops led by our own outstanding Texas presenters. From those new to service-learning to the intermediate and advanced practitioners, you'll gain practical resources and helpful suggestions to allow you to sustain and institutionalize success.
Reflections on previous Summer Institutes
This is the type of revolution that needs to be started! This approach makes sense and will be extremely applicable for working with kids."
Cathy and Jim’s enthusiasm is contagious! I learned so much."
I had a great time! All the sessions I went to were great!!"
The Institute renewed my spirit to do the work and live life fully! I came away with new and immediate tools to advance service-learning in my school and in our district."
Youth Track
During the Summer Institute Youth Track, the students will learn leadership skills and participate in team-building activities. Working with adult leaders and community partners, students will be involved in a hands-on service project in the Austin community. Since it is expected that the students will demonstrate what they have learned, they are being asked to videotape or in some other way record their experiences during the service project. Youth Track students will make a final reflective presentation to the adult attendees which will showcase their work during the three days of the Institute.
