S.T.A.R.S. of Texas
The Learn and Serve America: S.T.A.R.S. of Texas grant program operated on a three-year grant cycle from 2006 through 2009 and provided funding for public school districts to implement model initiatives that used the S.T.A.R.S. framework of service-learning (Student leadership, Thoughtful service, Authentic learning, Reflective practice, and Strong partnerships) to meet real community needs while supporting active student learning.
With funding from the Learn and Serve America program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, this program was designed to:
- Improve the environmental stewardship of land and water resources by community members in partnership with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and with other community partners;
- Increase the academic engagement of students in schools through high-quality service-learning programs; and
- Sustain and institutionalize service-learning practice in participating districts.
During the three years of this program, the number of students involved in service-learning increased from 35,402 to 51,791, the number of teachers increased from 1,920 to 2,404, and the number of campuses involved went from 184 to 225. In all, students in from 51 school districts participated in 11 regions of the state.
