Colorado ISD FCCLA Students “Step it Up”
Colorado FCCLA members Tori and Joanna decided to teach the 2nd graders about the importance of Exercise and Nutrition. After doing research on children and obesity, they made a plan. Every three weeks during the Culinary Arts 4thperiod class they provided a lesson on nutrition that included exercise and a nutritious snack. In the process, they developed positive relationships with the 2ndgraders, who were excited by their visits and enjoyed talking with them in school and around town.
To remind the 2nd graders about the importance of good nutrition, Tori and Joanna gave out bracelets with the message “Step it Up.” The bracelets became popular with high school students as well. Tori and Joanna also had a booth at the Kelley Fall Festival and the Community Health fair, where they were able to teach parents, other students and community members about the importance of exercise and nutrition. Their display included a glass with the amount of sugar in a 12-ounce can of Coke, food models with information on fat content, and coloring pages and handouts for participants to take with them.
Tori and Joanna feel that they have touched many lives with this program, which they’re continuing with until the end of May.
